Nonparametric Maximum Likelihood(NPML)

A likelihood approach which doesn’t require the specification of a full parametric family for the data. Usually, the nonparametric maximum likelihood is a multinomial likelihood on a sample. Simple examples include the empirical cumulative distribution function and the product limit estimator. Also used to relax parametric assumptions regarding random effects in multilevel models. Closely related to the empirical likelihood.
